Dear Cambridge Family,
This month
Cambridge students attended the Steinbeck play Of Mice and Men
produced by Pied Piper Players and starring Paul Hughes as
Lenny. Sixty-one students and parents enjoyed the play and the reception which
followed at the study center. Even though he was tired from the performance,
Paul Hughes attended the reception graciously giving his time to answer the
questions of our students and parents. Thank you Paul and thanks also to
Tammy Serebrin who facilitated the event and warmly welcomed
the Cambridge students before the play!
Speaking of
Pied Piper Players, Cambridge student Karis Medina will be
part of the cast in Once On This Island performing July 11 - 21 at
the Lake Mirror Center in Lakeland. Karis is one of our fine arts students who
will begin her third year at Cambridge this fall. To reserve tickets call the
Pied Piper ticket office at 603-7529.
Arts-in-the-Park on Kentucky Avenue in Lakeland is presently exhibiting a
photo by Cambridge instructor Cannon Kirby. It is one of a
series of photos Cannon made for Florida Dance Theatre. Another photo of the
same series is featured in the current issue of Art-i-facts Magazine.
(A footnote regarding Cannon's upcoming Introduction to Photography class
scheduled for late June: The recent email mentioning the class misquoted the
tuition. Cost of the class is $20 registration plus $75 tuition. We are sorry
for the confusion.)
Did you know
that we have three students coming to Cambridge from a distance next year?
Jonathan Savant will be moving from Ft. Lauderdale to attend
the study center. Jonathan will be staying with his grandparents, Bob
and Florie Henne of Winter Haven. Jonathan Crum
is coming from Indianapolis and will be living in Lakeland. Jonathan has
finished high school and will be enrolled at Cambridge in the very challenging
College Preparatory Class. Setting a new record for traveling to Cambridge
will be Kyle Schmidt who will be moving to Lakeland from
Cedar Rapids, Iowa to attend the study center. He will be staying with his
aunt and uncle, Vince and Becky Strawbridge
who will have five children at Cambridge next year.
If you call Cambridge on Mondays the phone may be answered by Jan
Coachman who has begun working as a volunteer at the study center.
Jan will be doing administrative work and special projects. She most
recently (with the able assistance of the wonderful Lynne Catching)
prepared our Cambridge Scholarship Fund mailout. It is a great relief to
have Jan's regular assistance with all these responsibilities!
Board member Steve Strodtman
and his wife Cheryl have given $20,000 to establish a
scholarship fund for Cambridge students from eastern Polk County. Steve and
Cheryl are faithful personal friends and longtime supporters of the study
center. It is their intention to encourage more students from that part of
the county to become involved in Cambridge classes. At present, we have a
number of students from that side of the county presently enrolled at the
study center. Because of their generosity, we look forward to seeing the
ministry of the study center multiplied in the lives of many more students.
Thank you Steve and Cheryl!
Cambridge is presently raising funds for the
Cambridge Scholarship Fund. Our goal is to raise $40,000 to
assist students with financial needs. If you would like to help a student
attend Cambridge classes next year, donations to the scholarship fund can be
made by mailing checks to Cambridge Study Center, 541 S. Florida Avenue,
Lakeland, FL 33801. Or if it would be more convenient, you can donate online
by credit card. A credit card link is at the bottom of the page.
Just a reminder that film nights have ended
for the year. Film nights for the youth and the adults will resume in
August. We would like to send a special thank you to Allen
and Harriet Montgomery for hosting the film nights for the
adults all this past year. They opened their home once a month to as many as
35 adults for film, fellowship and fun. We look forward to continuing the
series next year.
Because he
spoke from an eternal perspective, C.S. Lewis said that Christians should
never say goodbye. This school year ends in a couple of weeks, but we
understand that any separation is just a pause in God's providential gathering
of all His children. So instead of "goodbye," have a restful summer!
