Dear Cambridge Family,
Happy Year
2002! We trust you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with your
family and friends. We certainly did!
Cambridge
hosted it's first ever (maybe annual) Christmas
Open House during the afternoon of Sunday, December 9th. It was
fun to spend some time with so many of our favorite people during this
festive time of the year. We also wanted to give everyone who is not down
at the study center on a regular basis a chance to see the wonderful
facility the Lord has provided at First Christian Church. Thank you to all
who encouraged us with your presence and also to all the students, parents
and board members who helped with preparations and refreshments.
Alumni
news: Friend and former Cambridge student Richard Pearson is being
published! Richard will have his first book released, a collection of
photographs of Cuba. Richard's book will arrive at Barnes and Noble,
Borders and other bookstores in March, 2002 and will be available
for $45. Richard recently lectured on photojournalism in the Creative
in His Image class and was able to share many of his photos and
experiences in Cuba with Cannon's fine arts students. In October
Ben Keim was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma honor society at
University of Virginia. PES is a national honor society that recognizes
the accomplishments of outstanding freshmen. Ben continues his studies in
the classics department at the University of Virginia. Aaron Mesh
was awarded recently the Barbara L. Frye Scholarship for
Journalism. Aaron is a junior at Covenant College. This is his second
year as editor of Covenant's school newspaper, The Bagpipe. Bruce enjoyed
visiting many of our alumni "on location" at Covenant during the
Thanksgiving holidays. Congratulations all!
Current Cambridge student, Michelle Schaefer
was featured in the January newsletter of the Polk Museum of
Art. Michelle's tempera, "There's a Rainbow in My World", painted when she
was in the fifth grade, was selected for the year long exhibit
"Connection: A Shared Language" and purchased by the museum as part of
their permanent collection. Michelle's painting has appeared in Art-i-facts
magazine, Gulf Guide magazine and was used in 2001 for the PMA's Family
Day poster. Michelle continues her involvement at the museum as a
volunteer in the education department. Congratulations, Michelle!

Beginning
with this issue, eBridge will feature links at the bottom of each
newsletter. "Articles of Interest" and
"Recommended Reading" are provided for those of you interested
in learning more about some of the educational, apologetic and cultural
issues of interest to the Cambridge faculty and students. Also at the end
of each letter will be a brief notice of each fIRST fRIDAY screening for
the coming month. Our regular fILM fRIDAY emails will continue to be sent
out near the end of each month.
Our first fILM fRIDAY for
students this month had thirty-five (35) in attendance at the study
center for the screening of The Matrix. Discussion was led by
Dustin Kirby. The next student screening is this coming Friday, January
25th when Eric Fullgraf will lead an interesting discussion on Toy Story
2. You will be surprised at the themes hidden in this well done
animation! Twenty-two (22) showed up for our adult screening at Allen and
Harriet Montgomery's for the Igmar Bergman film The Seventh Seal
and Ron and Barb Mesh hosted an
alumni film night over the holidays, showing the Emma Thompson film Wit
after a dinner of pizza and salad. Bruce led the discussion and enjoyed a
time of fellowship with former Cambridge students. Films for the month of
February include Sleepy Hollow (Feb. 8) and The Truman Show
(Feb. 22) for the young people, and Cast Away (Feb. 8) for the
adults. Come if you can!
We look forward to a new year of preparing young people
and adults to meet the challenges of engaging our culture with the gospel of
Christ. Like many charitable organizations, Cambridge is experiencing a
severe budget shortfall. Please pray with us that the Lord would provide the
funds necessary to meet our present financial needs. We are grateful for
your ongoing support and encouragement, and we are trusting in our sovereign
God.
Sincerely,
Bruce and Jane Kirby
