February 2002
Dear Cambridge Family,
Greetings from Cambridge Study Center!!
We are excited to report that five of our
Cambridge art students entered photos in the 2002 Creative Youth: 12th
Congressional District Competition. High schools from eight counties
were represented. Of the 91 works selected, nine were photographs. Three
of the winning photos were from Cambridge students Christie Bell,
Michelle Schaefer and Jeremy Thrush!
Cambridge is pleased to be one of only ten schools represented in the
exhibit. The winning art will be on display March 11 through April 28 at
the Polk Museum of Art. Our congratulations to Christie, Michelle and
Jeremy... and to Cannon Kirby their instructor!
Recently Cambridge art students also attended a gallery opening at the Ybor
City School of Visual and Performing Art. Along with the art
collection on loan from Mr. Bud Lee, photos by
Cambridge students are also exhibited. Students Michelle
Schaefer, Elizabeth Strawbridge and
Jeremy Thrush have photographs of folk art still lifes on
display, and photos of folk artist Mama Johnson by Cannon Kirby and
former Cambridge student Richard Pearson are also
shown. The exhibit, titled "Florida Folk & Outsider Arts," runs through
February 28.
Along with Cambridge instructors
Dustin Kirby and Bruce Kirby, some of the
advanced Cambridge students recently attended a symposium on "The Quest
for the Historical Jesus in Twentieth Century Scholarship" at Florida
Southern College. The featured
speaker was Carsten Claussen of the Protestant
Theological Faculty of Munich speaking on the historical reliability of
the Gospel of John. Other symposium participants were Ernst
Baasland, Bishop of Stavanger in the Church of Norway,
James Charlesworth, professor of New Testament at Princeton
Theological Seminary and Walter Weaver of Florida
Southern College. A time of lively discussion and lunch was graciously
hosted afterward by Robin
Tirrell in her home near the college. Thank you Robin!
The Young Artists Concert sponsored by The
Bach Festival of Central Florida will feature two Cambridge students,
Christie Bell, soprano and Katie Bell,
soprano. The concert will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winter
Haven, Sunday, February 24th at 4:00 p.m. Donations will be accepted at
the door. Suggested donation: $10/adult, $5/senior, $3/student. For more
information please call 863-605-2200. Our congratulations to Katie and
Christie for being selected to perform at this Bach Festival event.
We have had an invitation from USF student
and Cambridge parent Mary Malaspina to attend
upcoming special lectures at the USF / Tampa campus on February
28th: "Athenian Democracy" by Princeton University professor Josiah Ober
and on April 2nd: "Christians and Pagans in Ancient Paneas (Caesarea and
Phillipi)" by Pepperdine University professor John Wilson. These
lectures have been opened to Cambridge students. For more information
contact Mary at 863.687.2019.
Cambridge was recently visited by
Mark Bertram from Houston Texas. Mark is a student of adjunct
faculty member, Dr. David McWilliams at Westminster Seminary in
Dallas. Mark sat in on Cambridge classes taught by Eric Fullgraf
and Dustin Kirby and with his wife Laurie attended the
adult fILM fRIDAY at the Montgomery's featuring the Tom Hanks film
Cast Away. Mr. Bertram leads Sword in Hand ministries in Houston.
Our first fILM fRIDAY
for students this month had thirty in attendance at the study center for
the screening of Sleepy Hollow. Discussion was led by
Cannon Kirby. The next student screening is this coming Friday,
February 22 when students will see The Truman Show. Discussion
will be led by Eric Fullgraf. You need not be a
Cambridge student to attend. Cost of admission is a snack: chips,
cookies or 2 liter drink. You are welcome to bring a friend.
We are pleased to announce
that Cambridge Study Center has been awarded a $60,000
Challenge Grant. This is an opportunity for you to have your
donation to the study center doubled. In order to receive these funds,
we must raise $10,000 every sixty days. We are still $3,980 short of
our goal for the first sixty days. If these funds are not raised the
matching funds will be lost. For your convenience you can make
donations by credit card from our website (www.cambridgestudycenter.org). Just
go to the Donations page and click the credit card icon. Or you can
mail checks to the study center at 541 South Florida Avenue, Lakeland,
Florida 33801. Donations to Cambridge are tax deductible.
We are grateful to the Lord for His
provision and for the many opportunities He is giving our students and
faculty to engage our culture. Please pray for our students, the
faculty and the Cambridge Foundation Board as they seek to further
Christ's Kingdom through the application of the Gospel to all of life.
Sincerely,
Bruce and Jane Kirby
