Every Thought Captive in Obedience to Christ

the Newsletter of Cambridge Study Center
August 2002

Dear Cambridge Family,

Summer news from some of our students: Christopher Calkins represented the state of Florida as National Scholar at the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. For eleven days Christopher met with leaders from Congress, the executive branch, the national news media and the diplomatic corps. We will report more on this conference in a later eBridge. Karis Medina had a busy summer. She performed at the Lake Mirror Center in the Pied Piper production of "Once On This Island." She and her dad traveled to Cuba to visit relatives and she was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students for 2002!  New student Olivia Williams was cast in the female lead (Blousey Brown) in the Theatre Winter Haven production of Bugsey Malone. We look forward to seeing Olivia in more productions in the future. Dellynne Strawbridge and adult students Gail Borden and Rick Strawbridge spent two weeks in England at the C. S. Lewis Conference in Oxford and Cambridge. Along with about 300 others, they participated in classes and seminars addressing the theme "Time and Eternity." Os Guinness, Peter Kreeft and William Lane Craig were among the many speakers. We are thankful for the safe return of all our students from their summer activities.

Others at the study center have also been busy this summer. Cambridge fine arts instructor Cannon Kirby was given the Award of Merit for his polaroid manipulation titled "100%,100%" and an Honorable Mention for the mixed media work "Eat of Me, Drink of Me" in a show at Arts On The Park in downtown Lakeland. The theme of the show was "Spiritualism in Art." During the month of July, Arts On The Park exhibited the work of Cambridge instructors Cannon Kirby and Bruce Kirby and former Cambridge student Richard Pearson. Many of Richard's recently published pictures of Cuba were in the show. Also exhibiting was sculptor Gregory Mills. Our thanks to Teresa Thrush and Mitchell's Coffee House for providing refreshments at the opening. Even though the opening was on the July 4th weekend, approximately 150 people attended. Cannon was honored this past week with an invitation to join the board of directors of Arts On The Park. Arts On The Park is a nonprofit corporation promoting the fine arts in central Florida. You can visit their gallery at 115 North Kentucky Avenue in Lakeland.

Don't forget that a new Thoughts Captive class for adult students will begin Monday, August 12 at 7:30 p.m. Bruce Kirby will be the instructor. The class will study literature and the arts and cultural apologetics. In the apologetics portion of the class students will work through Francis Schaeffer's Escape from Reason, while in literature and the arts they will consider the themes "The Sea as Metaphor" and "From Optimism to Absurdity." If you would like to be part of the class call Bruce at the study center (686-4862).

A special "thank you" to all of those who have prayed for Janie this summer. She began the summer with a case of shingles, followed by two surgeries for thyroid cancer. She also moved her mother into a nursing home, then moved herself (Bruce too!) into an apartment. She traveled to Tennessee to visit her ailing father-in-law. A new grandchild was added to the family (little Addie was added to Dustin and Cara's family) and somehow she also managed a week at the beach with her family. It has been a busy and stressful summer and we have survived only by God's grace. Janie is recovering slowly but must go through radiation treatment in a couple of weeks. Please continue to pray for her. We are so thankful for the faithful support of God's people!

Also continue in prayer for us as we begin a new school year on Monday, August 12. Like other nonprofits who rely on giving, the study center's financial situation is still not what it ought to be. The poor economy has caused many to postpone their charitable giving resulting in a significant deficit for the study center. But we know that God's sovereign purpose guides all human events. We "have made the Sovereign Lord [our] refuge" (Ps. 73:28). We anticipate God's rich provision for Cambridge Study Center.

Sincerly,
Bruce and Jane Kirby
