the Newsletter of Cambridge Study Center
April 2002

Dear Cambridge Family,

The Community Foundation of Greater Lakeland will have its annual meeting on May 23 at the Polk Museum of Art. Cambridge Study Center is one of several nonprofits that will be featured at this annual event. Art by Cambridge students Christie Bell, Karis Medina, Michelle Schaefer, Jeremy Thrush and Elizabeth Strawbridge will be on display. Music will be provided by pianist Miriam Keim, harpist Stephanie Short and vocalists Katie and Christie Bell. Other participating nonprofits are Florida Dance Theater, Pied Piper Players and New Life Ministries. The study center recently received a $10,000 grant from an anonymous donor through the Community Foundation which operates under the very capable leadership of executive director Fran Munson. We are thankful for this wonderful support from the Lakeland community!
Congratulations to Cannon Kirby, our fine arts instructor... again! Cannon has three of his art works displayed at the Ridge Art Association's "Recycle Show." The show, which includes found art, runs through May 12. One of his works was recently featured in the April 5 Winter Haven News Chief. We appreciate Cannon's outstanding job in getting the Cambridge fine arts program off the ground this year.

We recently enjoyed attending Florida Southern College's Festival of Fine Arts Spring Choral Fest under the direction of Dr. Larry Sledge. The event was held at Branscomb Auditorium and featured the Florida Southern Concert Chorale, the Lakeland Choral Society, the Florida Southern Symphony Orchestra and the Children's Choral Society. The event also featured Cambridge student Carla Hernandez. It was a wonderful evening of great music... thank you Carla!

We had a very fine trip to Gainesville. Friday afternoon Bruce met with Dr. Richard Horner of the Christian Study Center. Saturday morning Bruce and Eric Fullgraf attended the Gainesville book sale and were joined by Cambridge adult student Karen Douglass, her husband John and a number of other Cambridge students who traveled from Lakeland for the event. Saturday afternoon Bruce had an enjoyable meeting with former Covenant student Andy Montgomery and Saturday night Bruce and Eric held a film night for University of Florida students. Our thanks to UF student Ari Posten for arranging the film night, and further thanks to Dr. Horner and the study center for promoting it. Ari is a UF student engaged to marry Covenant student Tim Montgomery in August. They plan to settle in Atlanta after their August wedding.

Bruce recently led a film night in Winter Haven. A combination of young people from Cypress Ridge Presbyterian Church, Berea Presbyterian Church and Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lakeland attended. The event was hosted by Covenant Presbyterian in Winter Haven where David Wayne is pastor. The 26 young people were treated to a pizza dinner followed by The X Files and discussion. The evening was a project of the missions committee of Covenant Presbyterian in Lakeland.

Prospective students, their parents and others from the community attended our recent Preview Night. We enjoyed getting to know new people and look forward to teaching our new students beginning in August. If you missed the Preview Night, but have questions about attending Cambridge in the fall, you can call Bruce at the study center (863.686.4862) for a personal interview.

Those of you who expect to be Cambridge students next year should note that the registration deadline for new students is Thursday, May 2. Your cooperation in registering by this deadline will help us budget and schedule classes for next year. Registration forms and scholarship applications can be downloaded from the Cambridge website at www.cambridgestudycenter.org

The Challenge Grant for March/April has not yet been met. We are short of the challenge total by $2120. If those funds are not donated by tomorrow, April 30 we will lose that amount in matching funds. Anyone who would like to help us with a last minute boost toward our goal can use the credit card link at the bottom of this page. Our thanks to all who have contributed!

"I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord." (Psalm 27:13-14) Our confidence is in our great Creator/God, who is a person and who loves us... and in whose wisdom we trust!

Sincerly,
Bruce and Jane Kirby
