the Newsletter of Cambridge Study Center
November, 2000
Dear Cambridge Family,
Though we are thankful for your interest and
support of Cambridge Study Center throughout the year, we are especially
mindful as Thanksgiving approaches of God's goodness to us through your
participation in the study center. We appreciate your encouraging
comments, prayers, gifts, and the privilege of being part of your child's
education.
We are excited to report that effective
December 1, 2000 Bruce will be working fulltime as Director and instructor.
After 11 years on staff at Covenant Presbyterian Church, it is strange to
think of Bruce's not being there in an official capacity, but we will be involved
in many other ways and we look forward to continuing to worship and serve with
our Covenant church family. We are amazed and grateful to see God provide
the funds that have made this possible.
The field trip to the Gainesville Book Sale was
a huge success. 37 students, parents, and friends traveled in a
chartered bus, leaving at 5:30 a.m. and returning at 3:30 p.m. David Brandt
provided a breakfast of pastries and juices served on the bus. Thank you,
David! Many books were purchased at incredibly low prices...books for use
in the student's classes, others to build their personal libraries. Nathan Sligh found
a complete set of Will Durant's Story of Civilization and Trudi Sligh discovered
a large number of books for her classroom library at Geneva Classical
Academy. Chris Calkins selected quality children's books to add to baby
Simon's library...all the Fullgrafs and Kirbys appreciate that! Our thanks to
Don Collins, our bus driver from Central Florida Transit (see picture
below--click on it to see it full size), who did such a great job driving
us from Lakeland to Gainesville, and back again.
November Film Nights: (1st and 3rd Fridays of
the month - 7:30 p.m. at the Kirby's) featuring Ponette on the 3rd
and Wise Blood on November 16th. This is a time for
students and their friends (parents are always welcome!) to view a
serious film and participate in the discussion that follows. While having
a fun social time with friends, students also learn to be discerning regarding
today's films.
Student News:
College bound fourth year students Jacqueline
Thrush and Katie Mesh have returned from college preview trips to Covenant
College and Covenant, Grove City College and St. John's College respectively.
This is an exciting time for them as they make final decisions about their
college years.
Katie Mesh has recently been inducted into Phi
Theta Kappa, the National Honor Society, at Polk Community College where Katie
takes college classes to satisfy high school requirements in PCC's dual
enrollment program. Congratulations Katie!
Josiah Armes was featured on Good Morning Tampa
Bay on October 4th. He did a great job with his interview and his music.
( We have the tape! ) Next performance for Josiah: Classical
Thanksgiving and Christmas Concert featuring Marie Johnson, piano and
Josiah Armes, pipe organ on November 26th at 3:00 p.m. at Southside
Baptist Church. For more information e-mail Josiah at solideogloria@ithink.net.
At 12 years of age, Josiah is the youngest student at the study center. Keep
up the good work Josiah!
Robert Tirrell is teaching a six weeks chess
class for seven 1st-7th graders from Lakeland Christian School.
Robert currently competes in the K-12 Polk County division tournaments as a
9th grader. Robert has been playing chess since the 4th grade and won
1st place in the Polk Scholastic Regional Tournaments in grades 5th, 6th,
7th and 8th. He also won 1st place in the Florida Central
Scholastic Regional Tournament (5th grade) and 1st place in the Florida West
Regional Scholastic Tournament (8th grade). In addition to chess
Robert enjoys skate boarding and has just designed and built a neighborhood
skate park with his friend Scottie McBride in Scottie's cul-de-sac. Excellent,
Robert!
Kelli Mutz (who has 7 brothers, 4 sisters
and one brother-in-law! ) just returned from a sightseeing packed
educational tour of Washington, D. C. with her dad Bill, her mom Pam (who is
also a student in the adult class at the study center), her brother Michael
and her baby sister Emma. Along with becoming expert subway riders, the
Mutzes visited the major memorials, the Smithsonian's Natural and
American History Museums, the National Archives, the Bureau of Engraving
and Printing, the White House, and the FBI. Pam and Bill have also
just returned from speaking at the Family Life Conference in Portland, Oregon.
We are grateful for their commitment to share what Christ has done through
their family with others!
Miriam Keim, Lauren Saunders and Bucky Banks
continue to excel on their swim teams. Miriam and Lauren even have had
the pleasure of competing against one another when LHS and LCS
participate in the same swim meet.
We congratulate Dustin Douglass and Jonathan
Streets on an outstanding soccer season at Lakeland Christian! Since
they are seniors, their talents will be missed on the team next year!
Dustin is seriously considering Covenant College...Jonathan is still in the
decision making process. Dustin and Jonathan have participated in the
Logic and Thoughts Captive Supplementary classes.
Classes continue to go well...we enjoy having
all the students in our home and consider each of them part of our
family. They are special in unique ways and bring their own personalities,
talents, strengths, learning styles, etc. to the family...and what a lively family
it is! They are all loved and appreciated as special persons God has
created. Please contact the study center if you would like to see all of them in
the student directory on the website (www.cambridgestudycenter.org)...you
can request a password to access the directory. We would love for you to get
to know them in this way so that you can pray for them individually.
Brochures were mailed a few weeks ago regarding
the short term classes currently being offered. The next classes open for
registration are available after the first of the year. January - Theater:
The Stage of Ideas (V.C. Kirby) March - Mere Christology (D.
McWilliams) April - How to Argue with Your Child...and Win! (D. Kirby).
These classes are designed to equip believers to engage their culture. Please
contact us if you did not receive a brochure or if you would like more
information.
Remember that the Cambridge Philosophers Club
meets the second Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Thrushes.
Prayer requests:
-Thank the Lord with us that
He has provided financially so that Bruce could work fulltime with CSC.
-Pray for the Foundation
Board as they make important decisions, especially regarding fund raising
and
a facility that would allow more space while retaining the intimate
atmosphere that we believe is so
important for excellent learning.
-Pray for our faculty
(Bruce, Dustin, Eric, David, and Cannon)
-Pray for our students that
they will use their knowledge to further the Kingdom for Christ and to
enjoy
and glorify God.
Happy Thanksgiving as you enjoy God's abundant
blessings with your family and friends!
Sincerely,
Jane Kirby
